MG NOVATED LEASE

MG Novated Lease Australia

Compare MG electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and family SUV novated leases with Asset Finance Partners

An MG novated lease lets eligible employees salary package a new MG vehicle through their employer. It can combine finance and selected running costs into one regular payroll arrangement, rather than paying for the vehicle and its costs separately from after-tax income.

MG now has one of Australia’s broadest electrified ranges. That makes it a strong brand to compare—but the vehicles are not all treated the same under a novated lease.

MG offers:

  • Battery-electric cars and SUVs: MG4 EV Urban, MG4 EV, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV, Cyberster, IM5 and IM6

  • Conventional hybrids: MG3 Hybrid+, MG ZS Hybrid+ and MG HS Hybrid+

  • Plug-in hybrid: MG HS Super Hybrid

  • Petrol, diesel and other family vehicles: MG3, MG5, MG7, ZS, HS, QS and MGU9

Asset Finance Partners helps Australians compare the complete MG range and select the vehicle that fits their salary, employer, household needs, charging access and expected kilometres.

Why the MG model matters for a novated lease

The biggest mistake when comparing an MG novated lease is treating every “electrified” vehicle as the same.

MG powertrainExamplesHow it worksFBT position on a new novated lease

Battery electricMG4, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV, Cyberster, IM5, IM6Runs entirely on electricityMay qualify for the EV FBT exemption

This distinction can materially change the after-tax cost. A fully electric MG may be eligible for the electric-car Fringe Benefits Tax exemption where all requirements are met. A conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid can still be novated, but it needs a different tax calculation.

What is an MG novated lease?

A novated lease is an agreement between you, your employer and a finance provider.

You select the MG vehicle and sign the underlying finance agreement. Your employer then agrees to make payments from your salary. You remain responsible for the finance contract, while a salary-packaging provider or your employer may manage a budget for selected operating costs.

A fully maintained MG novated lease may include:

  • Vehicle finance

  • Comprehensive insurance

  • Registration and CTP

  • Servicing and maintenance

  • Tyres

  • Roadside assistance

  • Eligible electricity, charging or fuel costs

  • Lease administration fees

At the end of the term, there is generally a residual value. You may pay it, refinance it, sell or trade the vehicle, or move into another novated lease, depending on your agreement.

MG electric vehicle novated leases

MG4 EV Urban novated lease

The MG4 EV Urban is MG’s compact electric hatchback. It is designed for drivers who want a practical, city-friendly battery-electric vehicle without moving to a larger SUV.

MG offers different MG4 EV Urban battery options. Current published figures include a 43kWh battery with up to 316km WLTP range and a 54kWh battery with up to 405km WLTP range.

An MG4 EV Urban novated lease may suit:

  • City and suburban commuters

  • Employees looking for their first EV

  • Drivers replacing a small petrol hatchback

  • Households wanting an efficient electric second car

  • People with home, workplace or convenient public charging

The lower vehicle size and battery options make the MG4 EV Urban worth comparing closely against a small petrol car loan, especially where EV FBT eligibility applies.

MG4 EV novated lease

The MG4 EV is the more powerful, longer-range electric hatchback range. It is offered in variants including an Essence grade and performance-focused XPOWER option.

The MG4 EV is not simply an urban runabout. It can suit drivers who want electric hatchback practicality with longer-distance confidence, stronger acceleration or a more engaging drive.

An MG4 EV novated lease may suit:

  • Employees with regular motorway commutes

  • Drivers wanting a hatchback rather than an SUV

  • People comparing a long-range EV with a petrol performance hatch

  • Employees who value electric performance without moving into a premium-price SUV

With up to 452km WLTP range on selected MG4 EV variants, the right configuration should be chosen based on your weekly kilometres, charging availability, budget and insurance costs—not range alone.

MGS5 EV novated lease

The MGS5 EV is an all-electric family SUV. It brings the practicality of an SUV body style to drivers who want to eliminate petrol costs for their regular travel.

The MGS5 EV is available with different battery sizes, including 49kWh and 62kWh configurations. MG publishes up to 450km WLTP range for the larger-battery version, as well as Vehicle-to-Load capability on relevant models.

A MGS5 EV novated lease may suit:

  • Employees replacing a petrol or diesel small SUV

  • Young families needing SUV space

  • Commuters carrying prams, sports gear or work equipment

  • Drivers who want a practical electric vehicle without stepping into a larger premium SUV

  • Employees comparing the MGS5 EV with the BYD ATTO 3, Chery E5, Kia EV3 or Geely EX5

The MGS5 EV is one of MG’s strongest salary-packaging propositions because it combines a familiar family-SUV layout with battery-electric eligibility and manageable everyday running costs.

MGS6 EV novated lease

The MGS6 EV is a midsize, fully electric family SUV for drivers who need more space, longer range and stronger performance than a compact EV.

MG publishes up to 530km WLTP range for selected MGS6 EV variants, using a 77kWh battery. The range also includes an all-wheel-drive option for drivers who want more performance.

A MGS6 EV novated lease may suit:

  • Families needing more space than a compact SUV

  • Employees with frequent motorway and regional travel

  • Drivers replacing a midsize petrol or diesel SUV

  • People who want a longer-range EV without moving to a luxury badge

  • Employees who need a more substantial car for both work and family use

The MGS6 EV is a good example of why total cost matters. A larger battery and higher-value vehicle can raise finance and insurance costs, but the potential FBT treatment and lower energy costs can still make it compelling for the right employee.

MG Cyberster novated lease

The MG Cyberster is a fully electric roadster. It is designed for drivers who want a distinctive electric sports car rather than a conventional hatchback or SUV.

A Cyberster novated lease may suit:

  • Professionals seeking an electric performance vehicle

  • Drivers replacing a petrol sports car

  • Employees who want an EV as a lifestyle or weekend vehicle

  • Buyers who value design, open-top driving and performance

The Cyberster is a specialist choice. Insurance, tyres, vehicle price, kilometres and residual value deserve more attention than they would on a mainstream commuter vehicle. Asset Finance Partners can model the full package so the decision is based on actual after-tax cost.

IM5 novated lease

The IM5, presented by MG Australia, is a premium all-electric sedan. It is aimed at drivers who want long-range electric capability, a larger sedan body style and high-end technology.

MG publishes up to 655km WLTP range for selected IM5 variants, with performance variants achieving substantially quicker acceleration. It is suited to people who want an electric alternative to a premium petrol sedan.

An IM5 novated lease may suit:

  • Executives and professionals with longer commutes

  • Drivers who prefer a sedan over an SUV

  • Employees seeking premium electric technology and comfort

  • Buyers comparing a Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 or other electric sedans

IM6 novated lease

The IM6, presented by MG Australia, is a premium electric midsize SUV. It is available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, with different battery capacities and advanced chassis technology.

A IM6 novated lease may suit:

  • Professionals seeking a premium electric SUV

  • Families wanting more luxury and technology than a mainstream SUV

  • Drivers comparing premium EV SUVs

  • Employees who value range, performance and a spacious interior

As with the IM5, a tailored quote matters. Vehicle price, insurance, tyres, annual kilometres and the end-of-lease residual all affect the true cost.

MG hybrid and plug-in hybrid novated leases

MG3 Hybrid+ novated lease

The MG3 Hybrid+ is a conventional hybrid hatchback. It uses petrol and a self-charging hybrid system, so it does not require plugging in.

It may suit commuters who want better fuel efficiency than a standard petrol hatchback but do not have practical access to charging. It can be novated, although it does not generally receive the electric-car FBT exemption.

MG ZS Hybrid+ novated lease

The MG ZS Hybrid+ is a conventional hybrid compact SUV. It can suit drivers who want a practical small SUV with lower fuel use and no need to install or access an EV charger.

It is a worthwhile option for apartment residents, employees with uncertain charging access or people who want to retain petrol-refuelling convenience. A novated lease can still package its running costs, but it should be compared against the MGS5 EV using the correct after-tax structure.

MG HS Hybrid+ novated lease

The MG HS Hybrid+ is a conventional hybrid family SUV. It offers a middle path for drivers who need family-SUV space but are not ready to shift to a plug-in hybrid or battery EV.

It can be a good option for drivers who do regular local and motorway travel, but it uses the standard FBT treatment rather than EV-exempt treatment.

MG HS Super Hybrid novated lease

The MG HS Super Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid family SUV. It adds electric-only driving for shorter trips and a petrol engine for longer travel.

A MG HS Super Hybrid novated lease may suit:

  • Families who want an electrified SUV without relying entirely on public charging

  • Employees with mixed city, motorway and regional driving

  • Drivers who can charge at home but want petrol backup for road trips

  • People who are not yet comfortable moving fully electric

Important FBT distinction

The MG HS Super Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid, not a battery-electric vehicle. It can be novated, but it should not be assumed to qualify for the electric-car FBT exemption.

From 1 April 2025, plug-in hybrids are generally no longer eligible for the exemption on new arrangements, except where specific grandfathering rules apply. We will compare the Super Hybrid against an MGS5 EV or MGS6 EV on the correct after-tax basis.

MG petrol, diesel and family vehicle novated leases

MG’s petrol and diesel range can also be novated. These models may suit employees who do not want electrification or whose work, family, towing or travel needs make a conventional drivetrain more practical.

MG3, MG5 and MG7 novated leases

The MG3 is an affordable light hatchback; the MG5 is a compact sedan; and the MG7 is a larger fastback sedan. These models can suit drivers seeking a straightforward petrol vehicle with predictable payments and packaged operating costs.

MG ZS and MG HS petrol novated leases

The MG ZS is a compact SUV, while the MG HS is a midsize family SUV. Petrol versions can suit drivers who prioritise conventional refuelling and do not have reliable access to charging.

MG QS novated lease

The MG QS is a large seven-seat SUV. It is suited to larger families who need genuine passenger capacity, flexible seating and road-trip practicality.

MGU9 novated lease

The MGU9 is a dual-cab ute. It may suit employees who need towing, load capacity, outdoor-work practicality or a vehicle that can manage both family and work-related use.

For all petrol and diesel models, a novated lease can still streamline finance, registration, insurance, tyres and running costs. The FBT structure is different from an eligible battery-electric MG.

MG EV FBT exemption

Eligible battery-electric MG vehicles may be exempt from FBT, including associated car expenses. This is why models such as the MG4 EV, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV, Cyberster, IM5 and IM6 should be assessed separately from hybrid or petrol MGs.

In general, the exemption may apply where the vehicle:

  • Is a qualifying battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle

  • Was first held and used on or after 1 July 2022

  • Meets the relevant value and luxury car tax requirements when first held and used

  • Is provided through an eligible employment arrangement

Eligibility is not automatic. Your final result depends on the exact model, variant, price, employer arrangement and current legislation. FBT-exempt benefits may still be reportable on your income statement, so independent tax advice is recommended for your personal circumstances.

Charging an MG through a novated lease

For MG battery-electric vehicles, home charging is often the simplest everyday approach. Public charging provides flexibility for apartment residents, longer trips and drivers without off-street parking.

Your actual energy cost depends on your electricity tariff, charging pattern, distance travelled, vehicle efficiency and use of public rapid charging. Your salary-packaging provider may have a specific method for reimbursing or budgeting eligible home charging.

Range figures are useful for comparing MG models, but real-world range will vary with speed, traffic, weather, terrain, passengers, cargo, air-conditioning and driving style.
