Geely Novated Lease Australia
Compare Geely EX2, EX5 and Starray EM-i salary packaging with Asset Finance Partners
A Geely novated lease can help you package a new Geely electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid through your employer, combining the vehicle and selected running costs into one regular salary deduction.
Geely’s Australian range gives drivers three very different electrified options:
-
Geely EX2 — a compact battery-electric vehicle for city-focused driving
-
Geely EX5 — a fully electric family SUV
-
Geely Starray EM-i — a plug-in hybrid SUV for drivers who want electric driving with petrol backup
That difference is important. The Geely EX2 and EX5 are battery-electric vehicles and may qualify for the electric-car Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption where the requirements are met. The Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid and needs a different after-tax comparison.
Asset Finance Partners helps you compare the full cost of driving a Geely—not simply an advertised weekly payment.

What is a Geely novated lease?
A novated lease is an arrangement between you, your employer and a finance provider.
You select the Geely vehicle and enter into the finance agreement. The agreement is then novated to your employer, meaning payments are made through payroll while you remain responsible for the underlying finance contract.
A fully maintained Geely novated lease may include:
-
Vehicle finance
-
Comprehensive insurance
-
Registration and CTP
-
Servicing and maintenance
-
Tyres
-
Roadside assistance
-
Eligible home and public charging costs
-
Fuel costs for the Starray EM-i
-
Lease administration

At lease end, there is normally a residual value. Depending on your agreement, you may pay it, refinance it, sell or trade the vehicle, or start another lease.

Why consider Geely salary packaging?
Geely is a new-generation electrified brand in Australia, with options covering compact EV driving, family EV ownership and plug-in hybrid flexibility.
A Geely novated lease may help you:
-
Package predictable vehicle expenses through payroll
-
Avoid paying a large upfront amount for your next vehicle
-
Compare a battery EV with a plug-in hybrid using the correct tax treatment
-
Build charging, insurance, registration, tyres and maintenance into a single budget
-
Select a vehicle around your household size and charging access
-
Explore the potential FBT benefits of an eligible Geely battery EV

The right Geely is not simply the one with the lowest drive-away price. It is the one that works best with your salary, employment arrangement, charging habits, annual kilometres and vehicle needs.

Geely EX2 novated lease
The Geely EX2 is a compact battery-electric vehicle designed for city and suburban driving. It is a practical option for employees who want to move into an EV without stepping up to a larger SUV.
The EX2 can suit drivers who want:
-
A compact EV that is easy to park and manoeuvre
-
A lower-cost electric vehicle for commuting
-
An electric second car for the household
-
Technology such as a large touchscreen and smartphone connectivity
-
A practical alternative to a petrol hatchback

Who should consider an EX2 novated lease?
A Geely EX2 novated lease can be particularly relevant for young professionals, city commuters and employees who drive moderate daily distances. If you have home, workplace or convenient public charging, a compact EV can be simple to live with.
Because the EX2 is battery electric, it may qualify for the electric-car FBT exemption if all legislative criteria are met. This is why an EX2 novated lease should be compared against a small petrol-car loan using after-tax figures—not just the vehicle price.

Geely EX5 novated lease
The Geely EX5 is a fully electric SUV designed for Australians who want more space and versatility than a compact EV. It is the key Geely model for employees seeking a family-friendly electric SUV through salary packaging.
Geely publishes up to 475km WLTP range for selected EX5 configurations, although actual driving range will vary with speed, terrain, temperature, traffic, wheel choice, passengers, load and driving style.
A Geely EX5 novated lease may suit:
-
Employees replacing a petrol or diesel small-to-medium SUV
-
Families wanting a five-seat electric SUV
-
Commuters who need more space for children, sports gear or luggage
-
Drivers who have access to home or workplace charging
-
Employees comparing Geely with the BYD ATTO 3, Chery E5, Kia EV3 or similar electric SUVs

The EX5 offers the sort of SUV layout many Australians are familiar with, while removing day-to-day petrol costs. A fully maintained lease can package the vehicle, insurance, registration, tyres, servicing and eligible electricity costs into one arrangement.

Geely EX5 and the EV FBT exemption
The EX5 is fully electric, which means it may be eligible for the electric-car FBT exemption where all current requirements are met.
In broad terms, an eligible EV must:
-
Be battery electric or otherwise qualify under the current legislation
-
Have first been held and used on or after 1 July 2022
-
Meet the relevant value and luxury car tax threshold when first held and used
-
Be provided through an eligible employment arrangement

The exemption can apply to eligible car expenses as well as the vehicle benefit. However, your actual outcome depends on the exact vehicle, configuration, value, employer and current law. An FBT-exempt benefit may still be reportable on your income statement, so independent tax advice is recommended for your personal situation.

Geely Starray EM-i novated lease
The Geely Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid SUV. It combines an electric motor and battery with a petrol engine, allowing drivers to charge for shorter electric journeys while retaining petrol capability for longer travel.

Geely’s Extended Range Starray EM-i has published figures of up to 136km of pure electric WLTP range and up to 996km combined WLTP range for relevant configurations. Those figures should be treated as comparison figures; real-world results depend on how often you charge, how you drive and the conditions.

A Starray EM-i novated lease may suit:
-
Families wanting a midsize SUV
-
Drivers with mixed city, motorway and regional travel
-
Employees who can charge some of the time but not reliably every day
-
Drivers who are not ready to move fully electric
-
People wanting the flexibility of electric commuting and petrol road-trip range

Important: Starray EM-i FBT treatment
The Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid, not a battery-electric vehicle. It can be financed with a novated lease, but it should not be assumed to receive the same FBT treatment as the EX2 or EX5.
From 1 April 2025, plug-in hybrid vehicles are generally no longer eligible for the electric-car FBT exemption for new arrangements, except where specific grandfathering rules apply.
This means the Starray EM-i may still be a great fit for your lifestyle, but it needs a different financial comparison. We model its electricity, petrol, insurance, kilometres and normal FBT structure alongside the fully electric Geely options.

Geely EX2 vs EX5 vs Starray EM-i

Choose the Geely EX2 if you want:
-
A compact battery-electric vehicle
-
Easy city parking and lower overall vehicle costs
-
An EV for commuting and shorter daily trips
-
Potential EV FBT eligibility, subject to conditions
Choose the Geely EX5 if you want:
-
A fully electric SUV
-
More cabin and cargo space
-
Family practicality with battery-electric driving
-
Potential EV FBT eligibility, subject to conditions
Choose the Geely Starray EM-i if you want:
-
A plug-in hybrid SUV
-
Electric driving for selected trips
-
Petrol backup for regular longer-distance travel
-
More flexibility where charging is not always available

Charging your Geely through a novated lease

Home charging
For EX2 and EX5 drivers, home charging is often the most convenient option. Your electricity use and cost will depend on your tariff, charging pattern and household energy use. Salary-packaging providers may use a specific method to budget or reimburse eligible home-charging costs.
For a Starray EM-i, home charging can help you maximise electric driving for shorter trips, though petrol remains part of the ownership-cost equation.

Public charging
Public charging can assist drivers who live in apartments, travel further or do not have home charging. The charging speed depends on the vehicle, charger, battery temperature and state of charge.

Real-world range
Published WLTP figures are valuable for comparing vehicles, but they are not a promise of what every driver will achieve. We help you build a realistic kilometre and charging budget around your weekly routine.

Geely novated lease vs car loan
With a car loan, you normally make repayments from your after-tax income and manage insurance, registration, servicing, tyres, electricity and fuel yourself.
With a Geely novated lease, agreed costs can be paid through payroll and managed within one package. For eligible battery-electric vehicles such as the EX2 or EX5, the FBT exemption may make the after-tax comparison more favourable.
A car loan can still suit some buyers. Asset Finance Partners can compare both options based on the actual Geely model, your employer and your estimated annual kilometres.

What happens at the end of a Geely novated lease?
Your agreement will usually include a residual value. At the end of the lease, you may be able to:
-
Pay the residual and keep the vehicle
-
Refinance the residual, subject to approval
-
Sell or trade the Geely and use the proceeds toward the residual
-
Start another novated lease
We explain the residual at the beginning of the process. It should never be treated as an unexpected amount at the end.

Which Geely models may qualify for the EV FBT exemption?
The Geely EX2 and EX5 are battery-electric vehicles and may qualify where all current legislative conditions are met. The exact vehicle, value, first-use date and employment arrangement must be checked.

Is the Geely Starray EM-i FBT exempt?
The Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid. It should not be assumed to qualify for the electric-car FBT exemption on a new arrangement under current rules.

Can charging be included in a Geely novated lease?
Eligible home and public charging costs may be included or reimbursed within a fully maintained arrangement, depending on your employer and salary-packaging provider.
