Ute Finance for ABN Holders: How to Finance a Work Ute in Australia

For a tradesperson or contractor, a ute carries the tools, equipment and materials needed to earn an income. Choosing the vehicle and finance together can help avoid a purchase that looks affordable at the dealership but stretches cash flow once repayments and running costs begin.

Business ute finance allows eligible borrowers to purchase or use a work vehicle through an agreed finance arrangement. Having an ABN does not guarantee approval: lenders also assess the business, repayment capacity, vehicle and proposed structure.

Asset Finance Partners helps tradespeople, contractors and business operators explore finance for new and used work utes, single and dual cabs, fitted-out vehicles and fleets.

This guide explains what to compare, how to budget for accessories and what to prepare before applying.

Dual cab work ute with a fitted canopy and tool storage parked at a construction site.
Work ute finance should account for the vehicle, essential accessories, running costs and any final balloon payment.

Can You Get Ute Finance With an ABN?

Potentially. An ABN identifies your business, but it does not establish how much the business can afford to borrow.

Prepare a clear explanation of:

  • What your business does.

  • How long it has operated.

  • How the ute will be used.

  • The purchase price and proposed contribution.

  • Existing financial commitments.

  • The cash available for repayments.

A sole trader replacing an established work vehicle presents different circumstances from a new business purchasing its first ute. Explain the actual position so suitable lender options can be assessed.

What Type of Ute Should You Finance?

Start with the work the vehicle must perform.

Consider passenger requirements, tool storage, towing, loaded weight, travel distances and access to job sites. Ask the vehicle supplier to confirm that the complete configuration suits the intended use.

Single cab or dual cab?

A single cab may suit a business prioritising tray space. A dual cab may be useful when transporting a crew.

The additional purchase cost should be weighed against the operational benefit.

Standard vehicle or fitted-out work ute?

A tradesperson may need a canopy, service body, drawers, racks or specialised storage before the ute is ready for work.

Request an itemised quote for the complete vehicle. A repayment estimate based only on the showroom price can understate the actual requirement.

One ute or several vehicles?

For fleet purchases, identify whether every vehicle needs the same specification.

Standardisation may simplify servicing and equipment transfers, but different roles may require different vehicles.

How Does a Chattel Mortgage Work for a Ute?

A chattel mortgage is a business loan used to purchase a movable asset, such as a vehicle. The borrower owns the asset from purchase, while the lender takes security over it until the borrowing is discharged.

When comparing a proposed chattel mortgage, review:

  • Amount financed.

  • Deposit or trade-in contribution.

  • Interest rate and fees.

  • Repayment frequency.

  • Loan term.

  • Any final balloon payment.

  • Early payout conditions.

Asset Finance Partners helps businesses compare vehicle finance structures, including chattel mortgages and other available commercial options.

The appropriate structure depends on the borrower and intended use. Explain any personal use as well as business use.

How Much Should You Budget for a Work Ute?

Include everything required to put the vehicle into service.

Hypothetical purchase budget

Assume:

  • Vehicle drive-away price: $58,000.

  • Canopy and storage: $9,000.

  • Racks and accessories: $3,000.

  • Signwriting: $1,000.

The complete purchase budget is:

$58,000 + $9,000 + $3,000 + $1,000 = $71,000.

With an $11,000 cash contribution, the remaining requirement is $60,000, before finance fees.

This does not establish that every item can be financed. Ask the broker to confirm which costs the proposed lender accepts and which must be paid separately.

These figures are illustrative, not an Asset Finance Partners offer.

Can You Include Canopies, Trays and Accessories in Ute Finance?

Potentially, subject to lender policy and the transaction.

Provide supplier quotes showing each accessory, installation cost and delivery timing. If the vehicle and fit-out come from different suppliers, explain how the purchase will be coordinated.

Ask:

  • Can the lender fund the complete fitted vehicle?

  • Are separate invoices acceptable?

  • Must the fit-out be completed before settlement?

  • When will repayments begin?

  • What happens if installation is delayed?

The useful comparison is the cost of a vehicle ready to perform its intended work.

New Ute Finance vs Used Ute Finance

Compare the complete ownership cost rather than purchase price alone.

Buying new

Review the warranty, delivery date, servicing requirements and full fitted price.

If the vehicle is on order, ask how long any finance approval remains valid and whether changes to price or specifications require reassessment.

Buying used

Review the vehicle’s condition, kilometres, service history and expected maintenance.

A lower purchase price can be offset by repairs or downtime. An independent inspection can help identify issues that a finance assessment does not address.

Asset Finance Partners assists with new, used and private-sale vehicle scenarios, subject to lender requirements.

What Should You Check Before Financing a Private-Sale Ute?

Confirm the seller, vehicle and purchase details before committing.

Prepare the VIN, registration information, agreed price and seller details for the finance application.

A Personal Property Securities Register search can identify registered security interests and available stolen or written-off information. The PPSR recommends searching on the day of purchase or the day before. Keep the search certificate.

A PPSR search does not establish mechanical condition. Arrange an appropriate inspection and confirm the lender’s requirements for any existing finance payout.

How Does a Balloon Payment Affect Ute Finance?

A balloon leaves a lump sum due at the end of the loan. It can reduce regular repayments because less principal is repaid during the term.

The final obligation still needs a plan.

Hypothetical balloon example

Assume a loan has a $20,000 balloon at maturity.

If the ute can then be sold for $16,000, the sale alone leaves a $4,000 shortfall, before any selling costs or other amounts owing.

If the ute is still needed for work, selling it also creates a replacement requirement.

Consider how the balloon will be funded without disrupting the business. Future resale values and refinancing are not guaranteed.

Compare Quotes Using Total Payments

Ask for comparable quotes based on the same amount financed and term.

Hypothetical five-year comparison

Assume both offers finance the same purchase, with fees excluded:

Offer A

  • 60 monthly payments of $950.

  • Final balloon of $15,000.

  • Total scheduled payments: $72,000.

Offer B

  • 60 monthly payments of $1,150.

  • No balloon.

  • Total scheduled payments: $69,000.

Offer A reduces the monthly commitment by $200, but its total scheduled payments are $3,000 higher and it requires a final lump sum.

These invented examples are not available rates or offers. Actual comparisons should include fees, payment timing and early payout terms.

Check the Monthly Cost Beyond Finance

The repayment is only part of the work ute’s cost.

Budget for:

  • Fuel or charging.

  • Insurance.

  • Registration.

  • Servicing and tyres.

  • Repairs.

  • Parking and tolls.

  • Replacement transport during downtime.

For example, a hypothetical $1,100 monthly finance payment plus $650 in operating costs creates a $1,750 monthly commitment.

Check whether the business can meet that amount during quieter trading periods, not only its strongest months.

Can You Get Low Doc Ute Finance?

Asset Finance Partners assists with low doc asset finance scenarios. The available options and evidence required depend on the borrower, vehicle and lender.

Ask what alternative records may be accepted if conventional financial statements are unavailable.

Useful information may include business bank statements, BAS, management accounts or other evidence requested by the lender.

“Low doc” does not mean an ABN is the only requirement or that repayments will not be assessed.

What About GST and Tax Deductions?

Have your accountant review the vehicle, intended use and proposed finance agreement.

Confirm the treatment of GST, depreciation, interest, running costs and any private use. Do not assume that purchasing a ute through a business makes every cost fully deductible.

Base the purchase on its operational value and affordability, then assess the applicable tax treatment.

What Documents Should You Prepare?

A useful initial enquiry includes:

  • Identification and business details.

  • ABN and relevant entity information.

  • Vehicle quote or sale details.

  • Make, model, year and kilometres.

  • VIN where available.

  • Accessory and installation quotes.

  • Proposed deposit or trade-in.

  • Available financial records.

  • Existing finance commitments.

  • Required delivery date.

If the trade-in has finance owing, obtain a payout figure. Its advertised trade-in value is different from the net contribution available after that debt is cleared.

Frequently Asked Questions About Work Ute Finance

Can a sole trader apply for ute finance?

Potentially. The business, vehicle, financial position and intended use must meet the selected lender’s requirements.

Can a new ABN holder apply?

You can discuss the scenario with a broker, but a newly registered ABN does not guarantee eligibility. Explain previous experience, current work and available financial evidence.

Is a deposit always required?

Deposit requirements vary. Compare the available structures and the effect of a contribution on repayments and working capital.

Can I finance a used dual cab?

Potentially. Vehicle age, kilometres, condition, price and lender policy can affect the available terms.

Can I sell the ute before the loan ends?

Obtain a written payout and follow the financier’s requirements for discharging its security. Sale proceeds may not cover the outstanding amount.

Is a balloon compulsory?

Not across every product. Ask for available options with and without a balloon and compare the costs.

How quickly can ute finance settle?

Timing depends on assessment, asset checks, documents and approval conditions. Confirm the requirements for the actual purchase before relying on a collection date.
